Julia Montag is an artist based in New York. She paints colorful still lifes and loud abstract pieces with clean lines and unique color palettes.

I paint abstractly, drawing inspiration from the natural world and from the endless visuals of a big city. I seek to highlight this juxtaposition and portray it through hard boundaries between shapes and colors. My art is both an exploration of my innermost thoughts and a reflection of visuals, figures and forms around me. I hope to capture a sense of contrast and dynamism, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the interplay between shapes and colors that define our world.

Each piece I create is improvised — I paint without working from a sketch, and piece the colors together through visual trial and error of overlapping shapes in orientations of endless opportunity. The goal is to dance between intuition and intention, to achieve a balance between letting the paint guide me and directing its flow. Therefore each piece is an invitation to step into a world of endless possibility, where the boundaries between distinct, intangible feelings blur into something only art can put forth — something visually stimulating and thought-provoking.
